An Old and important community of Northern Thailand, Phrae was founded after Chiang Mai had been established as the as the capital of the Lanna Thai kingdom, in 1371 B.E. by Phaya Pol. The former name wad "Pol Nakorn", then changed to "Wiang Ko Sai" which means "Silk Cloth". The province contains one of the largest reservers of teak forests in the country and is located on the banks of the Yom River, 555 kilometers north of Bangkok. It covers an area about 6538.6 square kilometers and surrounded on all sides by mountains with level plains in the middle. Phrae is administratively divided in to 8 districts.
Like Chiang Mai, Phrae retained its fortified old city, while the new city grew around it. While the new city is charming enough, the old one contains sleepy alleyway lined with teak houses that are outstanding examples of traditional Thai architecture and number of beautiful temples. Many of these immense teak mansions were constructed by European traders who were engaged in the teak trade back in the 19th century. With its unique attractions, mountain scenery, and fresh, unexplored feeling, Phrae province is definitely North a visit for all.
